Working with Network Infrastructure Engineers, the field technician will help with circuit specific deployment and maintenance.

Work consists of running single mode fiber cross connections; running OTDR on dark fiber and providing diagnosis;

Hands & eyes work for network engineers; installing DWDM, routers and switches in racks; adding and/or swapping circuits/optics per detailed instruction;

Ethernet, fiber and power cable wiring; replacing PSU, disk drives and memory; diagnosing simple hardware issues; labeling and flagging circuits and hardware.

 

The Network Infrastructure organization is responsible for one of the world’s largest distributed platforms that handles a significant portion of the world’s Internet traffic.

Our Network Infrastructure Engineers build and maintain Akamai’s worldwide network.

You will work closely with other field technicians, ISPs, equipment vendors, and internal operations and engineering staff.

You will start by helping run cross connections, facilitate switch/router repairs, and manage Akamai’s hardware assets in co-location carrier hotels.

You will work closely with other internal teams in Akamai’s Network Infrastructure group, translating requirements from network architects, network engineers and design engineers into specific deployment project plans, network designs and network packages.

You will work with implementation managers, infrastructure delivery managers and network infrastructure engineers to ensure that these design plans and packages are implemented accurately and efficiently.

 

We are looking for a person with the following:

* Experience in a data center environment

* Multiple years of experience troubleshooting fiber-based circuits.

* Experienced working in networks that use 10G and 100G optics. 400G experience a plus.

* Experienced in fiber hygiene.

* Experienced with using multiple fiber cleaning tools and the appropriate situations to use each.

* Experienced in checking light levels and cleaning all sorts of fiber types.

* Comfortable using OTDR. Certification is preferred. Required after 6 months on job.

* Comfortable with VFL.

* Comfortable with scopes.

* Ability to lift 50 - 70 pounds and the ability to un-box and move equipment for several contiguous hours / days.

* Proficiency in both English and local language in country of assignment

* Must have reliable transportation. The job requires movement between locations that may not have access to public transportation. Locations are only in the Greater Los Angeles area.

* Must have a laptop, cell phone, driver's license, and a basic set of hand tools.

* Daytime (8 am - 5 pm, M-F) availability is preferred.

* Night and weekend work may also be required at some points

 

Responsibilities include:

Running cross connections.

Running and reading Viavi OTDR

Troubleshooting port errors in a fiber dense environment.

Location and processing of cross connects in data center patch panels.

Conduct fiber work (scope, light meter, cleaning)

Report damage packages to Logistics

Work on inventory reconciliation

Conduct PNI adds and router turn-ups

H&E to configure routers/DWDM

Install and maintain DWDM and wave servers

Process maintenance tickets

Provide training to newer team members

Coordinate data center facilities issues

Escalation point for ticket issues/prioritization
